Mission Statement
For my service project, I plan to conduct in-depth interviews with my grandfather and several other veterans who served during the Cold War and the Vietnam War. My goal is to gain a better understanding of their service, their personal journeys, and how these historic periods shaped their lives. I believe that first-hand accounts from veterans are an invaluable part of our nation’s history, and it is crucial to preserve their stories before they are lost to time. Each veteran has a unique perspective that can help future generations better appreciate the sacrifices made in the name of service and duty.
I am deeply aware of the sensitivity surrounding military experiences, especially those involving combat or trauma. I will approach each conversation with empathy and respect, ensuring that participants feel comfortable and in full control of what they choose to share. My intention is not to press for information, but to provide a space where veterans feel heard and honored.
To extend the impact of this project, I plan to compile these interviews into a website and audio archive that can be shared with others in my school and community. By doing this, I hope to educate others, especially younger generations, about the personal cost of war and the strength of those who served. This project is also a way for me to build deeper connections within my community, develop meaningful communication skills, and express my gratitude for the courage and resilience of our veterans. Through these stories, I want to ensure their memories are not only preserved but celebrated.
